55 Films In 10 Languages

Indic Film Utsav announced its 2022 programme featuring 55 films across 10 languages, primarily from India and centred on Indian stories, culture and civilizational themes. The four-day global online festival ran from November 10 to 13, 2022, on a secure, DRM-enabled OTT platform, with free access for audiences worldwide.

A Global Platform for Independent Cinema

Danji Thotapalli, Chief Curator and Festival Director, highlighted the role of film festivals in supporting independent filmmakers who lack large budgets or distribution networks. The online format enabled audiences to watch films from anywhere in the world, at any time during the festival. The previous edition had recorded 43,000 unique views, while its opening film, Punyakoti, had accumulated 10,000 viewing hours.

The 2022 programme featured two full-length Sanskrit films in its Special Screenings section: Sakuntalam, directed by Dushyanth Sridhar and based on Kālidāsa’s celebrated play Abhijñānaśākuntalam, and Bhagavadajjukam, directed by Yadu Vijayakrishnan and based on the classical Sanskrit drama attributed to Bodhāyana.

Stories Across Genres and Languages

Nikita Hattangady, Head of Programming, highlighted the diversity of the selection, including the world premiere of A Passenger in Love, the Telugu comedy Muthayya, documentaries on personalities such as Aruna Vasudev, B. B. Lal, Sajubai Gavit, Laishram Saritadevi, Pabung Syam and Jogesh Dutta, and a dedicated Women & Children category.

Christian Frost, Head of Filmmaker Liaison, welcomed audiences to discover independent films that offered distinctive stories, compelling filmmaking and perspectives rooted in Indian experience.

With its blend of features, documentaries, short films and Sanskrit cinema, Indic Film Utsav 2022 brought independent filmmakers and global audiences together through stories that celebrate India’s cultural heritage and enduring values.
